Yes, a small proportion of small breed dogs may be prone to liver shunts (e.g. 3% of Yorkshire Terriers) but those that don't have liver shunts can eat a high protein diet. Your vet can test your dog for liver shunts by taking a bile sample before and after eating. If your dog has liver shunts then your vet would likely prescribe medication and recommend a low protein diet.
